Interior design: essential in conveying the identity of a place, those who inhabit and live it.
Better known as the Jubilee Church, this place of Catholic worship in Rome was designed by Richard Meier. Like many other works by the American architect, it is entirely in white and made up of three sails, the highest of which reaches 26 metres in height.
The church with its sails, the boat-like nave, reflects the Christian tradition in which the boat represents the Church as a guide over impervious seas.
Even the light was carefully studied by the architect: though the entire structure is covered entirely by glass, sunlight only ever enters the church directly for one moment on a summer’s afternoon when it streams through a small window to light up the crucifix within.
